A man wise in strength, a man of faith, the esteemed colleague, the physician, the divine Kabbalist, the honorable Moshe David Valle From the inscription on his tombstone in Padua
Rabbi Moshe David Valle, known as the Ramdav or Ramad Valle, spent his whole life in Padua in northern Italy. He was a man of many disciplines: a Bible commentator, a physician trained at the University of Padua, learned in philosophy and the sciences, and above all a profound Kabbalist who left behind thousands of pages of writings. Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzatto, the Ramchal, saw him as his close companion and trusted partner in the secrets of the Torah.
Born on 21 Iyar to his father, Rabbi Shmuel, in the ancient Jewish community of Padua.
He studied with the city's rabbis, among them Rabbi Baruch Benedetto Luzzatto, Rabbi Isaac Cantarini and Rabbi Isaiah Bassan. At the same time he studied medicine at the University of Padua.
He qualified as a doctor and made his living healing the sick for the rest of his life.
At twenty-five he wrote, in Italian, a seven-part work of disputation in defense of the Jewish faith. In those same years he began his great commentary on the Bible.
He was ordained by Rabbi Shabbetai Marini and Rabbi Nathaniel Levi, together with the Ramchal and Rabbi Isaiah Romanin, on September 20, 1725, a few days before Sukkot (some sources give 14 Tishrei).
When the Ramchal founded his circle of Kabbalists, the Ramdav was among its leaders and arranged its study cycles together with Rabbi Yekutiel Gordon.
The Padua community board required the Ramdav, the Ramchal and other scholars of the city to give a weekly public lecture.
According to his notes, on that night the Ten Tribes were revealed to him.
When the Ramchal was forced to leave Italy, the Ramdav stayed in Padua and headed the circle. He also served as cantor in the Sephardic synagogue and was known as a preacher.
Eight large handwritten volumes, mostly a Kabbalistic commentary on the entire Bible, with a personal spiritual diary in the margins.
He passed away on a Tuesday, at the age of eighty, and was buried in the Jewish cemetery of Padua.
A society called "Mevakshei Hashem" (Seekers of God) met in Padua, where the Ramdav gave lectures together with Rabbi Israel Hezekiah Treves and Rabbi Jacob Hazak. The young Ramchal attended these lectures and was drawn to Kabbalah, which he also studied with the Ramdav at his home. Over time the roles reversed: the Ramchal became the teacher of the circle, and the Ramdav his companion and second-in-command.
Every Shabbat at the time of Minchah, the Ramdav and Rabbi Israel Treves sat together at the third meal and studied the secrets of the Torah. The poet of their generation, Ephraim Luzzatto, dedicated a sonnet in praise of their lectures.
"The Seven Days of Truth," a seven-part work of disputation, written at the age of twenty-five.
Eight volumes in his own hand, written over some forty-five years. The manuscripts were preserved in the Almanzi collection.
Seventy mystical discourses on the verse that closes the Torah, "And in all the mighty hand" (Deuteronomy 34:12).
Personal notes he wrote in the margins of his commentary, describing his spiritual experiences.
Written during the active years of the Ramchal's circle. It reads the Psalms as the inner struggles of the righteous soul, with King David as its model.
A collection on many subjects, including spiritual remedies and medical writings from the view of a physician and Kabbalist.
Published in installments in the Torah journal "Tzefunot".
Each linked title opens the full scan on HebrewBooks (Hebrew).
The manuscript of "The Seven Days of Truth," about 800 pages, is held at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York. His writings on Scripture total some 15,000 pages, and Gershom Scholem put his handwritten legacy at nearly 20,000 pages. For about two hundred years they lay in manuscript. Since the 1990s Rabbi Yosef Spinner has published them in dozens of volumes, including a Kabbalistic commentary on the entire Bible. The Ramdav may be the only one ever to complete such a commentary on every book of Scripture.
At night he would not go to sleep until he knew every member of his community had returned home safely. All that time he stood in prayer and study. The Jews of Padua remembered him as the city's protector and revered him.
It is told that he used to study Torah standing on his feet, and he was known as a great master of both the revealed and the hidden Torah.
In the diary of visions he wrote in the margins of his commentary, he described how the Ten Tribes were revealed to him that night. The diary is full of spiritual experiences, encouragement and disappointment.
According to tradition, one Yom Kippur a fierce storm struck Padua, and it was recorded in the Ramdav's notes as well. Believers link it to the circle's intentions to hasten the redemption on that day.
Every Shabbat he sat with his companion Rabbi Israel Treves at the third meal, where the two would share the Torah's secrets. A guest who joined them described it in a letter, and Ephraim Luzzatto wrote a poem about it.
He served as cantor of the Sephardic synagogue in Padua and was known for his sermons.
In recent years many have traveled to pray at his grave for the blessing of children. It is told that those who were blessed afterwards named their sons Moshe David, after him.
His wife was named Simcha. According to one tradition they had a son named Shmuel, after the Ramdav's father, who passed away about a week after his brit milah.
In recent decades the Ramdav's writings have also been studied at universities in Israel and around the world. Here are the main findings:
Scholem described him as a physician and Kabbalist who spent most of his life in seclusion and study, and who served as cantor of the Sephardic synagogue. His contemporaries saw him as a man of spiritual powers who received revelations. His seventy tikkunim were printed in Warsaw in 1889, appended to the Ramchal's "Megillat Setarim". According to Scholem, his handwritten legacy runs to nearly 20,000 pages.
Prof. Alan Brill highlighted the place of "labor" in the Ramdav's thought. In his commentary on Exodus he wrote that Israel became a nation when it moved from "difficult and bitter" human labor to "good and sweet" divine labor. Redemption, for him, is the repair of labor itself.
The Ramdav linked effort in Torah to the battle against the husk of Amalek, drawing on the closeness of the words 'amal (effort) and Amalek. He saw his own generation as the "footsteps of the Messiah," a time that demands especially great effort.
In his commentary on Psalms he set the false counsel of human politics, which he called by its Italian name, politica, against the divine counsel of the Torah. King David is his model of both a king and a person.
Members of the circle simply called the Ramdav "the physician," and medicine and anatomy take up much space in his writings. According to the circle's writings, by an angelic revelation he permitted his beloved student Rabbi Yekutiel Gordon to study medicine at the University of Padua.
The Ramdav, who called himself a "sifter," saw tobacco smoking as a tool for strengthening contemplation and fighting evil, and a way of sifting sparks of holiness. In one passage he linked the spread of smoking in his day to the footsteps of the Messiah.
The community of Padua remembers the Ramdav as the city's protector, who stayed awake at night in Torah and prayer and by his merit guarded the local Jews. After the Ramchal was forced to leave Italy, the Ramdav remained in Padua and carried on his path. He wrote in a free, associative style, and his son Shmuel Chaim was named after his father.
In our generation his name has become known again, among both the Charedi and the Religious Zionist communities:

The ghetto was founded in 1603, and its gates were locked at night. There the Ramdav, the Ramchal and their companions lived and studied.
Photos of the ghetto
Jews lived in Padua as early as the 14th century. The ghetto was established in 1603, and four gates closed it from sunset to sunrise. The keys were held by a Jewish and a Christian guard. The ghetto was abolished in 1797, with the fall of the Venetian Republic. The University of Padua granted medical degrees to more than two hundred Jews, the Ramdav among them.
Three synagogues operated in the ghetto: the German-rite synagogue on via delle Piazze (1525), the Italian (1548) and the Spanish (1617). The last two faced each other on via San Martino e Solferino. The Ramdav served as cantor in the Spanish synagogue.
The cemetery on via Campagnola was founded in 1527 and enlarged in 1653 at the initiative of Rabbi Solomon Marini. The tombstones are simple and upright, without flowers or pictures, and visitors place stones on them in remembrance. On leaving, visitors wash their hands at the basin by the entrance.
The museum manages visits to the old cemeteries, and the via Campagnola cemetery can be visited by prior arrangement.
